- Perinatal HIV
Why is this Important?
Providing early, adequate and risk appropriate prenatal care has been an important strategy to improve birth outcomes. However, in the past decade, Indiana has made little progress in increasing the percentage of pregnant women entering first trimester prenatal care, which is now at less than 80 percent; below the rapidly approaching Healthy People 2010 Objective of 90 percent.
Role of IPN
IPN believes that in addition to removing barriers to care, efforts are needed to improve the content and quality of care. In conjunction with a broad range of perinatal providers throughout the state and existing professional associations, IPN:
- Produces a variety of documents outlining current standards and guidelines of care
- Develops high quality materials for providers to help educate patients on critical issues such as preterm labor
- Looks beyond traditional medical models to identify different models of providing prenatal care that address barriers and improve acceptability of the care to meet the diverse needs of pregnant women
